3,500 Government Houses in Karachi Still Under Illegal Occupation
3,500 govt houses in Karachi remain under illegal occupation; only 700 recovered since 2019 as authorities intensify eviction efforts.

The Ministry of Housing and Works has disclosed that around 3,500 government-owned houses in Karachi remain under illegal occupation, despite years of recovery efforts. Since 2019, authorities have managed to reclaim only 700 houses, leaving thousands still in the hands of unauthorized occupants.
According to the ministry’s report, Islamabad and Lahore currently have no illegally occupied government residences, as earlier cases were resolved and 742 houses were successfully vacated in both cities.
In Karachi, however, the situation is far more complex. Out of the city’s 7,882 government houses, approximately 2,200 were unlawfully allotted, with many original files missing, making the recovery process more challenging. So far, recovered properties have generated Rs 40 million, and legal cases are underway against individuals refusing to vacate.
The ministry confirmed that the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Rangers, and police are actively assisting in eviction operations to speed up the process. Officials have stressed the importance of reclaiming these homes to ensure fair allocation and protect public resources.
