OGDCL Discovers Oil and Gas in Kohat, KP
OGDCL unveils new oil, gas reserves in Kohat, producing 2,280 bpd oil and 5.6 MMSCFD gas; a boost to Pakistan’s domestic energy potential.
In a major uplift for Pakistan’s energy sector, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) on Wednesday announced a fresh oil-and-gas discovery from its Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well in the Nashpa Block of Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the company, the well is currently yielding 2,280 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and 5.6 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas, marking the first hydrocarbon find from the Triassic-age Kingriali Formation in Nashpa.
Drilled to a depth of 5,170 metres after being spud-in on December 24, 2024, Baragzai X-01 tapped a 90-metre-thick interval, prompting wireline logs and a successful drill stem test.
OGDCL holds a 65 percent working interest in the Nashpa Exploration Licence, with partner Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) holding 30 percent, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) carrying a 5 percent interest.
Officials say the find could help narrow Pakistan’s widening energy supply–demand gap using homegrown resources. This discovery promises not only to beef up the nation’s hydrocarbon reserves but also to underpin further exploration in the region.
With this breakthrough in Kohat, OGDCL reaffirms its position at the forefront of Pakistan’s efforts to harness domestic energy, and signals a fresh shot in the arm for the country’s push toward energy self-reliance. (Express Tribune)
