Rawalpindi to Receive Five New Flyovers and Underpasses to Ease Traffic

Rawalpindi is set for a major transformation as the Punjab government unveils an ambitious plan to tackle the city’s chronic traffic problems. The project involves constructing three underpasses and two flyovers at some of the city’s busiest intersections: Katchery Chowk, Jinnah Park (Annexy Chowk) on Airport Road, and Iftikhar Janjua Chowk on G.T. Scope and Investment

The initiative has been approved by the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP), with a combined budget exceeding Rs. 13.33 billion. The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) has been tasked with implementing the project, bringing in its experience in handling large-scale infrastructure works.

Preliminary activities, such as piling tests, have already started near Fatima Jinnah Women University and the district courts. Jinnah Park (Annexy Chowk) Developments

The Jinnah Park intersection is another key focus. The project here includes:

• A 1,263-foot underpass for Mushtaq Baig Shaheed Road-bound traffic.

• A 1,509-foot flyover for vehicles traveling toward Airport Road.

• Rehabilitation of 2.22 kilometers of at-grade roads.

• Acquisition of 5.95 kanals of land to support construction.

These upgrades aim to smooth the flow of traffic in one of Rawalpindi’s busiest corridors, especially during peak hours when congestion has historically slowed movement to a crawl.

Iftikhar Janjua Chowk: Improving Connectivity

Iftikhar Janjua Chowk, which handles approximately 146,000 vehicles daily, will see a 1,165-foot underpass and 1.56 kilometers of road rehabilitation. Land acquisition for this section will cover 4.28 kanals. Officials emphasize that the redesign will not only alleviate congestion but also enhance road safety for commuters.
