In a significant step towards strengthening the identity of the national currency, the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) has officially introduced a new symbol for the UAE Dirham (AED). The newly designed symbol will now represent the dirham in both physical and digital formats, aligning the UAE's currency representation with global standards. The CBUAE announced that the new symbol will gradually be integrated across all banking systems, financial transactions, official documents, and digital platforms. This move is part of the UAE’s broader vision to modernize and enhance its financial infrastructure. According to the Central Bank, the new dirham symbol reflects the nation’s cultural heritage, economic strength, and futuristic outlook. The design is inspired by traditional Arabic calligraphy while maintaining a contemporary and minimalistic style for global adaptability. The introduction of the symbol is expected to provide greater recognition for the UAE dirham in international markets, strengthening its position among global currencies. The symbol will also be used across keyboards, websites, mobile applications, and digital payment gateways, facilitating seamless usage in electronic transactions. The CBUAE further confirmed that local and international financial institutions have been directed to update their systems to accommodate the new symbol. Banks and exchange houses will soon start incorporating the symbol into banknotes, ATMs, PoS machines, and financial reports.
The official rollout of the symbol will be accompanied by an awareness campaign to familiarize the public, businesses, and financial institutions with the new representation of the currency. The UAE government emphasized that this initiative demonstrates its commitment to innovation, modernization, and the promotion of the national identity. The new symbol also reflects the UAE’s status as a regional financial hub. The Central Bank assured that the transition will be smooth and that existing dirham notes and coins will continue to be valid and in circulation alongside the new symbol's implementation. The UAE is among the few countries in the region to introduce a unique currency symbol, marking another milestone in the country's financial evolution. The symbol is set to become an integral part of the UAE's brand, used not only in financial sectors but also across government communications and international platforms.
