Journalist Khawar Hussain Tragically Shot Dead in Sanghar

Veteran journalist Khawar Hussain was found shot dead in Sindh’s Sanghar district on Monday, sparking outrage among journalist unions and renewed concerns over the safety of media professionals in Pakistan.

According to police, Hussain’s body was recovered from the outskirts of Sanghar with multiple gunshot wounds. He had been missing since Sunday night. Authorities have cordoned off the area and shifted the body to the district hospital for a post-mortem examination.

“We have registered a case and initiated a full investigation. The motive behind the killing will be determined after evidence collection and witness statements,” a senior police officer said.

Hussain, who had been associated with several Sindhi newspapers and local news outlets over the past two decades, was widely respected for his fearless reporting on rural politics and social justice issues.

The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) condemned the incident, calling it another dark day for press freedom. “We demand immediate arrest of the perpetrators and stronger safety measures for journalists working in high-risk regions,” PFUJ President stated.

Colleagues described Hussain as a dedicated professional committed to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. His tragic death adds to the alarming pattern of violence against journalists in Pakistan, a country already ranked among the most dangerous places for media workers.

Human rights organizations have also urged the government to take concrete steps to protect reporters, stressing that impunity for such crimes emboldens further attacks.

Funeral prayers for Khawar Hussain will be offered in Sanghar later today, where fellow journalists, friends, and community members are expected to gather in large numbers to pay tribute.
