Indus River in Medium Flood at Major Barrages, Water Levels Surge

— The Indus River has swelled into medium flood levels at several major barrages, including Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa, following continuous heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.

According to the Sukkur Barrage control room, Guddu and Sukkur barrages are still recording low-flood levels, but water inflow is rising and Guddu is expected to hit medium flood within the next 24 hours.

Water levels at major reservoirs are also approaching their limits. Tarbela Dam is currently at 1,548.02 feet, just two feet short of its maximum capacity, while Mangla Dam has reached 1,211.90 feet, nearly 69% full.

Fresh readings from the irrigation department show:

  • Guddu Barrage: Inflow 282,900 cusecs, Outflow 256,100 cusecs

  • Sukkur Barrage: Inflow 211,500 cusecs, Outflow 154,900 cusecs

  • Kotri Barrage: Inflow 81,200 cusecs, Outflow 66,200 cusecs

Officials have warned that with reservoirs filling rapidly and inflows increasing, downstream districts face a heightened risk of flooding, especially in low-lying rural areas.

This year’s monsoon has already proved deadly. Torrential rains and flash floods across Pakistan have claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands of families, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the worst affected. Relief agencies remain on high alert as further rain spells are forecast.

Authorities are urging communities living near embankments and riverbanks to remain vigilant, as water levels are expected to rise further in the coming days.
