Karachi Approves Rs 1.4 Billion Azeempura Flyover to Ease City Traffic

A major development project worth Rs 1.4 billion has been approved in Karachi to construct a new flyover on Azeempura Road, aimed at reducing the traffic load on some of the city’s busiest roads. The new flyover will connect Shahrah-i-Bhutto with Sharae Faisal, offering a signal-free corridor that will particularly benefit those commuting to Jinnah International Airport.

The decision was finalized in a high-level meeting chaired by Mayor Murtaza Wahab, where officials from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) including the Municipal Commissioner, Chief Engineer, and Financial Advisor gave the green signal to start work on the 500-metre-long project. Construction is expected to begin immediately and is slated for completion within one year.

This flyover is part of a broader infrastructure development initiative by the Sindh government, which has been allocating funds in recent budgets to revamp Karachi’s deteriorating road network. Projects already underway include the Korangi Causeway Bridge, signal-free corridors, and expansion of several other key intersections.

Transport analysts have hailed the Azeempura flyover as a strategic solution to Karachi's traffic bottlenecks, especially for reducing travel time between central and eastern parts of the city. With its signal-free design, the flyover is projected to handle thousands of daily commuters more efficiently and reduce the burden on parallel roadways.

However, the city's residents remain cautiously optimistic. Past experiences with delays, incomplete construction, and poor coordination have left many skeptical about whether this new project will meet its deadlines. Complaints about roads left dug up for extended periods and disruptions to traffic flow during construction are still fresh in the minds of many Karachiites.

Still, the city government appears committed to ensuring smooth and transparent implementation. Regular updates have been promised, and the project has been placed under close monitoring for timely execution.

In addition to this flyover, Karachi is also moving forward with urban upgrades such as the introduction of new hybrid and electric buses, major sewerage and water line repairs, and improvement of drainage systems. These initiatives aim to bring Karachi’s urban infrastructure closer to the standards of a modern metropolitan city.

Officials believe that the successful completion of the Azeempura flyover will significantly reduce congestion at key junctions, enhance commuter convenience, and lay the foundation for future large-scale urban projects across the city.
