Karachi’s Modern Railway Station Opens Sept 10

Pakistan is preparing for a major milestone as the modern railway station in Karachi will be inaugurated on September 10, announced Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi. The launch marks a key step in the government’s nationwide modernization drive, aimed at making Pakistan Railways more efficient, passenger-friendly, and technologically advanced.

Abbasi said the new station is part of a wider plan to revamp rail infrastructure, improve passenger facilities, and boost operational efficiency. Recent reforms include digital ticketing, a train tracking system, ATMs at major stations, and Wi-Fi at 40 stations across Punjab.

The minister confirmed that outsourcing of passenger and freight trains, guest houses, saloons, hospitals, and schools will be completed by September 30. Special saloons, once reserved for officials, will now be available to the public at affordable rates, generating revenue while offering premium travel to more people.

Station cleanliness has been handed over to solid waste management companies, while provincial food authorities will ensure food quality at railway facilities.

The Punjab government has allocated ₨50 billion for upgrades on eight routes, while ₨250 billion will fund a double track and modern signaling system between Lahore and Rawalpindi, cutting travel time to just over two hours.

Officials say the Karachi station will serve as a model project, showcasing modern design, passenger-focused facilities, and digital services to help revive public trust in train travel.
