Renowned Pakistani journalist Zubeida Mustafa passed away on July 9, 2025, in Karachi at the age of 84. Her family confirmed the news, marking the end of a distinguished career that spanned over five decades.

Born in India in 1941, Mustafa moved to Pakistan at a young age. She completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees in international relations from the University of Karachi. In the 1960s, she began her professional journey as a research officer at the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs. Her tenure at Dawn newspaper began in 1975, where she served as an assistant editor until her retirement in 2008. During her 33-year career at Dawn, she played a pivotal role in launching supplements like the Education Page and Books & Authors, Pakistan's first dedicated English-language literary magazine.

Mustafa was a trailblazer for women in journalism in Pakistan. She was the first female journalist from the country to receive the International Women’s Media Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Her work primarily focused on social issues, education, and health—areas where she demonstrated deep empathy and a commitment to improving the lives of ordinary citizens. She also authored books, including her autobiography My DAWN Years: Exploring Social Issues, and Reforming School Education in Pakistan & the Language Dilemma.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan mourned her loss, acknowledging her advocacy for social, cultural, and language rights. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also expressed deep sorrow, describing her as an "excellent journalist" whose contributions would always be remembered.
