Arshad Nadeem shines at the 35th National Games in Karachi, throwing 81.10m to win javelin gold for WAPDA and reaffirm his dominance in Pakistani athletics.
Karachi: Olympic javelin star Arshad Nadeem lit up the National Stadium on Sunday, winning gold at the 35th National Games with an impressive throw of 81.10 metres. Representing WAPDA, Nadeem’s performance left his competitors far behind, with no other athlete crossing the 80-metre mark, according to reports by The Express Tribune.
The 27-year-old, who made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics as Pakistan’s first individual gold medallist, added another shining achievement to his career. The National Games, running across 24 venues in Karachi until December 13, saw a surge in excitement thanks to his participation. Fans packed the stadium, eager to watch Pakistan’s sporting hero in action.
“It gave me goosebumps to throw in front of the Pakistani crowd — even though it was an exhibition throw, it felt very special,” Nadeem said. He also expressed gratitude to the Government of Sindh for organizing a spectacular opening ceremony.
Fellow WAPDA athlete Yasir Sultan took silver with a throw of 70.77 metres, while Abrar of the Pakistan Army earned bronze at 67.68 metres. Nadeem’s dominance highlighted his continued supremacy in national athletics and inspired young athletes watching both in the stadium and across the country.
In addition to his victory, Nadeem had the honour of serving as the Games’ flag-bearer, a recognition of his contributions to Pakistani sport. “Honoured to be the Flag Bearer at the National Games 2025 in Karachi. Amazing crowd and unforgettable energy,” he shared on social media.
The opening ceremony, featuring Nadeem’s ceremonial throw, was attended by high-profile dignitaries including Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Sports Minister Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mahar, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Their presence added prestige to an already celebratory event.
With this gold, Arshad Nadeem not only reinforces his position as Pakistan’s athletics superstar but also raises the profile of the National Games. His performance sets a benchmark for aspiring athletes, showing that dedication and talent can lead to national pride and international recognition.
