In a major relief for electricity consumers, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction of Rs. 1.79 per unit in power tariffs for September 2025. The decision comes under the mechanism of Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) and is aimed at passing on the benefit of lower fuel prices and improved energy generation costs to consumers.

According to NEPRA’s official statement, the reduction in electricity prices is primarily due to:

  • Lower international fuel prices are leading to reduced energy production costs

  • Improved power generation mix with higher reliance on hydropower

  • Optimized utilization of cheaper energy resources

  • Better management of energy imports and supply chains

This reduction comes as part of NEPRA’s monthly FCA mechanism, which adjusts power tariffs based on fluctuations in fuel prices and energy generation costs.

  • Tariff reduction: Rs. 1.79 per unit

  • Effective month: September 2025

  • Applies to: All power distribution companies (DISCOs) except K-Electric

  • Reason: Lower fuel cost adjustments for July 2025

  • Impact: Significant relief in electricity bills for domestic and commercial users

A NEPRA spokesperson said:

“The approved reduction in power tariffs under the Fuel Cost Adjustment will provide direct financial relief to electricity consumers. Our focus remains on ensuring transparent pricing and passing on the benefits of lower generation costs.”

Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Energy highlighted that ongoing efforts to diversify the energy mix and increase hydropower production are helping bring stability in electricity prices.

The approved relief is expected to ease the financial burden on households and businesses already grappling with rising living costs. Economists suggest that the Rs. 1.79 per unit reduction could result in lower monthly bills, freeing up disposable income and reducing inflationary pressure to some extent.

  • A household consuming 300 units of electricity will save approximately Rs. 537.

  • A business consuming 1,000 units will benefit by around Rs. 1,790.

It’s important to note that this relief will not apply to consumers in Karachi, as K-Electric operates under a separate tariff adjustment mechanism. NEPRA is expected to conduct a separate review for K-Electric consumers in the coming weeks.

The announcement has been welcomed by consumers nationwide, especially amid high inflation and rising energy costs. However, some experts caution that the relief is temporary and future adjustments will depend on fuel price trends and energy sector reforms.

The Rs. 1.79 per unit reduction in September electricity bills marks a much-needed financial respite for millions of consumers across Pakistan. While this decision reflects the positive impact of falling fuel prices and better energy management, experts emphasize the importance of long-term reforms to ensure sustainable energy pricing and affordable electricity in the future.
