Court Case Puts Complete Ban on Gambling Apps in Pakistan

In a landmark decision, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has imposed a complete ban on online gambling apps and websites operating in Pakistan. The verdict comes after increasing concerns over illegal betting, financial fraud, and addiction risks linked to online gambling platforms.

The ruling directs the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to immediately block all gambling-related apps and websites to safeguard citizens, particularly the youth, from digital exploitation.

The case was filed after multiple complaints were lodged regarding the rapid growth of gambling apps in Pakistan, which were allegedly being used for money laundering, betting, and financial scams.

During the hearing, the court highlighted the severe social, moral, and financial consequences of online gambling, noting that several platforms were operating without regulatory oversight and targeting vulnerable users, including students.

The ruling affects all online betting applications and web-based gambling portals, including sports betting apps, online casinos, and virtual poker platforms.

Experts believe this decision will significantly curb financial fraud, protect minors from exploitation, and reduce gambling addiction among Pakistani users.

The decision has received mixed reactions from the public. While many have welcomed the move as a step toward protecting families and youth, others argue that unregulated platforms may continue through VPNs, calling for stronger cybersecurity measures.
