A tragic incident occurred on Monday as a Pakistan Army helicopter crashed in Chilas, a town in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, claiming the lives of five military personnel, officials confirmed.

According to Diamer SSP Abdul Hameed, the helicopter went down during a test landing on a newly proposed helipad. Following the crash, police and rescue teams swiftly reached the site to initiate evacuation and recovery operations.

Preliminary reports suggest that the accident may have been caused by a technical fault, though a detailed investigation is underway. Faizullah Faraq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, described the incident as “deeply regrettable” and noted that the same helicopter had previously been deployed for relief operations in the region.

GB Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan confirmed that the crash resulted from a technical failure and immediately ordered an emergency alert at Chilas Hospital. Medical teams were put on high alert to manage any potential injuries and provide support. The chief minister also extended condolences to the families of the martyred personnel and hailed their sacrifice as a “source of pride for the nation.”

This incident follows a series of helicopter crashes in Pakistan over the past year:

  • Just weeks ago, a rescue helicopter crashed in Bajaur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, during flood relief operations, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including two pilots.

  • Last year, a private petroleum company’s helicopter crashed near the Shewa oil field in North Waziristan, leaving six people dead and eight others injured.

The Pakistan Army has yet to release the identities of the martyred personnel, but tributes are pouring in from across the country, honoring their dedication and bravery in the line of duty. The incident highlights the risks faced by military forces while serving the nation in remote and challenging terrains.
