Iran Issues Airspace Alert Near Strait of Hormuz as US Forces Deploy
Iran issues a NOTAM for live-fire drills near the Strait of Hormuz from Jan 27–29 as US forces arrive in the Middle East, escalating regional tensions.
TEHRAN: Iran has warned of upcoming military exercises in the skies near the Strait of Hormuz, issuing a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) just hours after the arrival of US military forces in the Middle East. The move signals growing tension in the region amid heightened security concerns.
The notice, released Tuesday, specifies that Iranian forces will conduct live-fire drills from January 27 to January 29 within a five-nautical-mile zone around the strait. The affected airspace, from ground level to 25,000 feet, is considered dangerous during the exercises, with both civilian and military flights advised to avoid the area.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, handling millions of barrels of oil each day. Military activity in the area often has a direct impact on global energy markets and raises concerns over regional stability.
The NOTAM coincides with increased US military operations in the region. US Air Forces Central (AFCENT) recently launched a multi-day readiness exercise to demonstrate rapid deployment and operational capabilities.
US officials have made clear that “all options remain on the table” regarding Tehran, including the potential for military action, while the United States and Israel aim to counter Iran’s regional influence. Iranian authorities have issued warnings that any attack on the country would be met with a “swift and comprehensive” response.
