KP to Reopen Historic British-Era Hiking Trail

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced plans to reopen the historic Munro Hiking Trail in Mansehra, offering adventure seekers and nature lovers a renewed opportunity to explore one of Pakistan’s most scenic trekking routes.

The decision was finalized during a joint meeting of the KP Tourism Department, KP Forest Department, and the KP Culture and Tourism Authority, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Located near Jabouri in Mansehra district, the Munro Hiking Trail is considered one of the most picturesque adventure destinations in northern Pakistan. The trail was originally developed between 1900 and 1905 by A.V. Munro, a British Forest Conservator during colonial India.

Designed as a horse pathway, the trail historically connected Kund to Kamal Ban in the Naran Valley, cutting across rugged terrains between the Siran Valley and the Kaghan Valley.

To make the trail more attractive to tourists, the KP Forest Department has recently introduced several upgrades and modern facilities. These include:

• Accommodation facilities at the trail’s entry point

• Enhanced safety measures for trekkers

• Preservation efforts to maintain the trail’s natural ecosystem

Officials stated that these improvements aim to promote eco-tourism, attract domestic and international travelers, and strengthen adventure tourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The reopening of the Munro Hiking Trail is part of KP’s broader strategy to position the province as a prime tourist destination. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and natural beauty, KP continues to expand opportunities for trekking, hiking, and adventure sports.

Tourism experts believe this initiative will boost the local economy, create job opportunities, and highlight the region’s potential as a global adventure tourism hub.
