RAWALPINDI: A medical board that examined former prime minister Imran Khan inside Adiala Jail has reported visible improvement in his eyesight, easing weeks of political heat over his health.

According to Dawn and The Express Tribune, a two-member panel of ophthalmologists carried out a detailed check-up at the prison. The team included specialists from Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital and Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.

The board recorded reduced swelling in Khan’s right eye and noted that his vision has improved with treatment. Without glasses, his right eye measured at partial 6/24, while the left stood at 6/9. With corrective lenses, doctors said his vision improved significantly, reaching near-normal levels in the left eye.

Medical experts also pointed to a drop in macular thickness, a key marker in retinal health, describing it as a “positive response” to ongoing treatment. While mild retinal haemorrhage was still observed in the right eye, doctors said the condition is stabilising.

The board did not recommend shifting Khan to a hospital, stating that his current treatment plan remains adequate. They advised continuation of medication and further diagnostic imaging in the coming weeks to track progress.

The update comes after repeated calls from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders demanding better medical access and greater transparency. Party officials had earlier voiced concerns about possible vision loss and pressed for independent oversight.

Government representatives, however, said the medical findings show there is “no immediate cause for alarm.” Briefings were also shared with Khan’s associates and personal physicians.

For now, the report appears to calm immediate fears, but politically, the debate over his health care behind bars is far from over.
