A notification from The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has been issued adding a three credit hour course on artificial intelligence (AI)  mandatory in all undergraduate and post graduate programmes across the country from academic session 2026.

All public and private sector higher education universities and institutes have been given instruction by the HEC to add a compulsory AI course in the curricula making it priority without any delay.

HEC instructed that every undergraduate and postgraduate degree programme will include a compulsory course on artificial intelligence (AI). As Dawn reported, this would be a three credit hour course offered as an elective subject, an interdisciplinary course as a supporting within the existing programme structure.

According to HEC "In the fast-changing world of 21st century, Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a revolutionary force," It further emphasised that integrating AI into academic curricula will not be just an addition but a necessary step into readily evolving world.

This addition of AI course will help empower students with knowledge and skills required in their respective fields, enhancing a solid understanding of emerging technologies and maximising the benefits of these tools in both academic and professional settings.
