Heavy Rain and Snowfall Disrupt Life in Neelum Valley and AJK, Triggering Landslides and Roadblocks
Relentless heavy rain and snowfall have severely impacted daily life in Neelum Valley and other regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), leading to landslides and road closures, including major disruptions along the Neelum Highway. Several areas, including Athmaqam, Keran, Upper Neelum, Sharda, and Kel, are facing continuous downpours, while Upper Gurez, Halmat, Taobat, Shounter, and Arang Kel have been blanketed in thick layers of snow. These extreme weather conditions have caused significant travel disruptions, leaving many areas isolated and inaccessible. The harsh weather has also resulted in prolonged power outages, with electricity supply cut off since 10 PM, plunging entire communities into darkness. Additionally, communication networks have been heavily impacted, making it difficult for residents to stay connected or seek assistance. Authorities have issued safety advisories, urging residents to remain indoors and take precautions as unstable terrain increases the risk of landslides. Once conditions stabilize, efforts to clear blocked roads and restore essential services will commence. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall continues for the third consecutive day in Muzaffarabad and surrounding valleys, raising concerns about rising water levels in rivers and canals. The potential for flooding has added to the challenges faced by residents, but their resilience remains evident as they navigate these hardships. Despite the severe disruptions, local authorities are working diligently to restore normalcy, ensuring relief efforts reach affected communities as soon as conditions permit.
