Iran is in turmoil as widespread protests over economic hardships and political grievances collide with global tensions. According to Al Jazeera, hundreds of civilians have reportedly died, and over a hundred security forces have been killed since demonstrations erupted in late December. The government has yet to confirm these figures.

President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed concern for citizens’ struggles but warned against “a group of rioters destroying society.” He also accused foreign powers, including the US and Israel, of attempting to destabilize Iran, according to Dawn.

The US has not held back. President Donald Trump told reporters, “The military is looking at it, and we’re examining very strong options.” He described the unrest as a “historic opportunity for freedom in Iran,” signaling potential support for demonstrators.

Regional powers are treading carefully. Qatar called on all sides to avoid escalation, warning that any conflict could be “catastrophic for the region,” as reported by Barron’s. Israel lauded the protesters’ bravery, while the EU signaled possible sanctions in response to the crackdown.

China and Russia have denounced foreign interference, emphasizing Iran’s sovereignty. Turkey, too, suggested some unrest may have been “manipulated by Iran’s rivals from abroad.”

The UN is urging restraint. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said peaceful expression must be protected, warning that continued violence could spiral into wider conflict.

With streets in Tehran tense and international attention high, the world faces a delicate balancing act, diplomacy or confrontation.
