The US Postal Service (USPS) has resumed accepting parcels from mainland China and Hong Kong after briefly halting shipments due to President Trump’s new trade policies. The changes include eliminating the “de minimis” exemption, which previously allowed tax-free imports of goods valued under $800.
Retailers like Shein and Temu have long used this loophole to ship low-cost items directly to US consumers, prompting concerns about unfair competition and lost tax revenue. The new tariffs took effect Tuesday, leading USPS to pause shipments temporarily before resuming them in coordination with US Customs and Border Protection. Meanwhile, the European Union is also increasing scrutiny of Chinese e-commerce giants, imposing stricter customs checks and holding platforms accountable for unsafe products. The EU is investigating Shein over potential violations of consumer protection rules. Shein stated it would cooperate with authorities to ensure compliance while maintaining a competitive e-commerce sector.
