The World Bank has approved a US$47.9 million grant, funded by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Fund, to support primary education reforms in Punjab, Pakistan. The initiative aims to enhance enrollment, improve learning outcomes, and strengthen teacher training while making the education system more resilient to climate-related and emergency challenges.

“Getting Results: Access and Delivery of Quality Education Services and System Transformation in Punjab” focuses on building an inclusive, sustainable, and high-quality education system.

  • Expand early childhood education (ECE) to improve foundational learning.

  • Re-enroll out-of-school children and increase access to primary education.

  • Provide teacher support and training to enhance teaching quality.

  • Strengthen remedial learning programs at the elementary level.

  • Improve responsiveness to climate change and emergencies.

  • Boost Enrollment Rates
Punjab has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children in Pakistan. The project aims to bring thousands of children back into classrooms by introducing awareness campaigns, reducing financial barriers, and improving school accessibility.

  • Strengthen Teacher Training
Teacher quality is a critical factor in improving learning outcomes. The project includes capacity-building programs, digital learning tools, and modern pedagogical approaches to equip educators with the skills required for 21st-century education.

  • Enhance Early Childhood Education
Investment in pre-primary and early learning programs will ensure that children develop strong foundational skills from the start, reducing future learning gaps.

  • Climate and Disaster Resilience
Schools across Punjab often face disruptions caused by floods, heatwaves, and other climate challenges. The program focuses on disaster-resilient infrastructure and climate-focused education to make the sector more adaptive.

The initiative is designed to support the poorest and most vulnerable families in Punjab. By focusing on equity in education, it seeks to:

  • Ensure girls and boys have equal opportunities to access education.

  • Address socio-economic barriers that prevent children from attending school.

  • Provide learning support to those most affected by poverty and emergencies.

The World Bank’s $47.9 million grant represents a major milestone in reforming primary education in Punjab. By expanding access, empowering teachers, and improving resilience, the initiative is expected to deliver long-term benefits for children, families, and communities.

With a strong focus on early education, equity, and climate adaptability, this program promises to bridge learning gaps and prepare Punjab’s youth for a competitive future.
