“Avatar: Fire and Ash” Dominates Holiday Box Office
James Cameron’s latest Avatar wows fans, earns $760M worldwide, and sparks talk about the franchise’s future.
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has taken the box office by storm this holiday season, showing that the Na’vi are still a big draw for audiences. According to The News, the film earned $64 million in the U.S. during its second week, bringing its total domestic earnings to $217 million. It also made $181 million overseas, pushing the global total to an impressive $760 million.
The movie has performed even better than its predecessor, The Way of Water, which saw sharper drops in its second week. Tribune reported that Fire and Ash added $88 million over Christmas, setting a strong holiday record. Meanwhile, indie hit Marty Supreme posted A24’s second-biggest debut, showing just how dominant Cameron’s blockbuster remains.
Both critics and audiences are enjoying the film as a rare holiday-friendly blockbuster. Dawn noted that under all the action and special effects, the story has themes of family, forgiveness, and redemption, making it a surprisingly good pick for Christmas viewing. Its stunning visuals and rich world of Pandora have also been praised, offering both eye-catching spectacle and a solid story.
Even with these big numbers, Cameron is cautious about the franchise’s future. In comments to The News, he said the continuation of Avatar beyond the fifth film depends on how well it keeps performing. “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. We prove that business case every time we go out… If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and tell you what we were going to do,” he said. He also hinted that future stories could be explored in books to dive deeper into Pandora’s world.
For now, Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to fill theaters and dominate the box office, showing James Cameron’s skill at mixing big spectacle with emotional storytelling. Whether this success guarantees the next films is still unknown, but for now, the Na’vi are on top.
