Imran Khan Taken to PIMS for Brief Eye Procedure; PTI Demands to See Him
Imran Khan underwent a short medical procedure at PIMS, prompting PTI to demand immediate access and clarity over his health.
ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan was shifted from Adiala Jail to Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a short medical procedure related to an eye condition, government officials confirmed, as his party accused authorities of secrecy and denial of access.
According to Dawn, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Khan was examined by specialist doctors inside the jail before being moved to PIMS on medical advice. After Khan’s written consent, doctors carried out a procedure lasting around 20 minutes, following which he was returned to jail with post-treatment instructions.
Tarar maintained that Khan’s condition was stable and dismissed speculation about any serious health emergency, saying the former premier was “absolutely fine” and receiving appropriate medical care under jail rules.
However, the episode triggered a strong reaction from PTI leadership, which said neither Khan’s family nor senior party figures were informed about the hospital visit or the nature of the treatment. Addressing a press conference, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said the lack of transparency raised serious concerns.
“The family was kept in the dark. We were not told why he was taken to the hospital or what procedure was performed,” Gohar said, calling the situation “deeply troubling.”
The Express Tribune reported that PTI leaders cited media reports suggesting Khan may be suffering from a serious eye condition that could threaten his vision if not treated properly. They demanded immediate access for Khan’s personal doctors and family members, including his wife Bushra Bibi, saying the last family visit took place months ago.
PTI has repeatedly approached the Islamabad High Court seeking permission for meetings and independent medical evaluations, but party leaders claim their requests have either been delayed or rejected.
The government, meanwhile, insists Khan is being treated in accordance with the law and that political exaggeration is fueling unnecessary panic.
As questions continue to swirl, the brief hospital visit has once again placed Khan’s health and detention conditions at the center of Pakistan’s already heated political landscape.
