Murree Gears Up for First Snowfall of the Winter Season

Murree prepares for the first snowfall of winter 2025, with tourism officials, hotels, and rescue teams on high alert for safe travel.

Murree Gears Up for First Snowfall of the Winter Season

The scenic hill station of Murree is getting ready to welcome its first snowfall of the 2025–26 winter season, as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts a drop in temperatures and the arrival of cold winds from the north in the coming week.

Officials in the Rawalpindi district administration have issued early winter advisories, warning that light to moderate snowfall is likely to begin in the upper areas of Murree and Galyat by mid-November. Preparations are now underway to manage the annual rush of tourists who flock to the hill station once the first flakes fall.

“Our teams are on high alert this year. Machinery for snow clearing, salt reserves, and emergency staff have already been deployed across major routes,” said Assistant Commissioner Murree, Tariq Awan, while speaking to local reporters. “We want visitors to enjoy the snow season safely  without the traffic chaos and road closures seen in previous years.”

Tourism Industry Anticipates Early Boost

Local hoteliers and restaurant owners are expecting a surge in bookings as families from Islamabad, Lahore, and Faisalabad plan weekend trips to witness the first snowfall. According to the Murree Hotels Association, advance reservations for the second half of November have already jumped by nearly 40% compared to last year’s early winter period.

“The first snowfall always brings life back to Murree’s economy,” said Khalid Khan, a hotel manager on Mall Road. “We’ve stocked up on heating fuel, blankets, and food supplies to accommodate visitors comfortably this time.”

Preparations and Safety Measures

Authorities have stationed snow-clearing machinery at key choke points  including Kashmir Point, Pindi Point, Bhurban Road, and Patriata  where heavy buildup previously trapped vehicles during peak tourism weekends.
Traffic police have also announced entry limits to prevent overcrowding. Only 8,000 vehicles per day will be allowed beyond the toll plaza once snowfall begins.

In addition, tourist facilitation centers have been reactivated at Jhika Gali and Lower Topa, offering hot beverages, emergency medical kits, and 24-hour assistance. The local rescue teams are also conducting safety drills ahead of the expected weather change.

Weather Outlook

According to PMD meteorologist Saima Shah, the coming week will see temperatures in Murree drop to 2–4 °C at night, with a chance of frost and light snow showers over the weekend. The first significant snowfall of the season is expected between November 12 and 15, depending on wind intensity and humidity levels.

“Murree and adjoining hill stations will experience their early winter phase earlier than usual this year,” Shah said. “We advise tourists to check weather updates before traveling and carry proper winter gear.”

Caution for Travelers

Authorities have urged visitors to avoid night-time driving during snowfall and to ensure their vehicles are equipped with snow chains, warm clothing, and emergency kits. Heavy fines will be imposed on motorists parking on narrow routes or blocking traffic lanes.

Residents and businesses are also being advised to conserve gas and electricity, as energy demand typically spikes during the first cold wave of the season.

A Season of Caution and Celebration

Despite concerns about overcrowding and road safety, Murree’s community remains optimistic. Local shopkeepers are decorating stalls with warm shawls, caps, and dry fruit baskets, while tea stalls are preparing for the annual influx of snow-seekers.

For Murree, the first snowfall is more than just a weather event  it’s a symbol of renewal, marking the beginning of a season that blends beauty, tourism, and the challenge of managing thousands of eager visitors on icy roads.
