Punjabi cinema icon Jaswinder Bhalla passed away on Friday morning at the age of 65. The veteran comedian and actor breathed his last at Fortis Hospital in Mohali after suffering a brain stroke earlier this week.
According to family sources, Bhalla’s cremation will be held on Saturday, August 23, at 12:00 PM at the Balongi cremation ground in Mohali.
Widely regarded as the face of Punjabi comedy, Bhalla rose to fame with his Chhankata series before becoming a household name through hit films such as Carry On Jatta, Jatt & Juliet, and Mahaul Theek Hai. His popular characters, including Chacha Chatar Singh and Advocate Bhalla, entertained audiences for decades with humor that often carried subtle social messages.
Tributes poured in from across Punjab. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “Chacha Chatra will always reside in our hearts,” while Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal remembered him as “a cultural treasure.” Actors including Gippy Grewal, Neeru Bajwa, and Binnu Dhillon also expressed deep sorrow, calling him a mentor and an inspiration.
Born on May 4, 1960, in Ludhiana, Jaswinder Bhalla was not only a celebrated artist but also an academic. He held a PhD in Agriculture and served as a professor at Punjab Agricultural University, balancing education with his passion for performance.
Jaswinder Bhalla leaves behind his wife and children, including actor Pav Bhalla. His passing marks the end of an era in Punjabi cinema, but his legacy of laughter, humility, and cultural pride will live on in the hearts of millions.
