Gemini AI Replaces Google Assistant in Google Maps Beta
Google begins rolling out Gemini AI in Maps beta, replacing Assistant for smarter navigation, toll-free routes, and real-time weather updates.

Google has started integrating Gemini AI into its apps and services, gradually replacing the long-standing Google Assistant. The latest to receive this update is Google Maps, where Gemini now takes over navigation tasks in the app’s beta version.
According to a report by Android Authority, users enrolled in the Google Maps beta program have begun noticing Gemini as the new in-app voice assistant. When users tap the familiar microphone icon in the top-right corner of the navigation screen, the Gemini spark icon now appears — signaling that Google’s new AI assistant has taken charge.
Initially, the microphone retains Google Assistant’s signature colors, but once activated, it switches to Gemini’s visual identity. This subtle yet significant shift indicates Google’s broader plan to unify its ecosystem under the Gemini brand.
Smarter Commands and Broader Functionality
Unlike its predecessor, Gemini AI goes beyond basic navigation commands. Users can now ask Gemini to avoid toll routes, and the assistant automatically adjusts the route accordingly. It also handles contextual queries like weather updates or points of interest, making the experience more conversational and intelligent.
This marks a noticeable improvement over Google Assistant’s limited in-app functions, as Gemini leverages AI-driven reasoning and contextual understanding to deliver more relevant responses.
Gradual Rollout and Future Availability
At present, the Gemini Maps integration is only visible to select beta testers. Google has not yet announced a public release date, but sources suggest the update may roll out globally in the coming weeks as part of Google’s plan to fully transition users from Assistant to Gemini.
The move reinforces Google’s ambition to position Gemini as its flagship AI ecosystem, capable of managing everything from voice commands to real-time information and navigation assistance.
With its introduction into Maps, Gemini is no longer just a chatbot it’s becoming the core intelligence layer across Google’s most-used products.
