Pakistanis are gearing up for a dazzling night sky as the final supermoon of 2025, known as the “Cold Moon,” takes center stage between December 4 and 5. The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) confirmed that the full moon will shine larger and brighter than usual, giving stargazers a rare treat.

A supermoon happens when the full moon aligns with its closest approach to Earth, or perigee, making it appear slightly bigger and more luminous. December’s Cold Moon is the year’s last supermoon and will peak at 04:15 PST on December 5. In most parts of Pakistan, the moon will rise nearly fully illuminated at 16:58 PST on December 4, offering several hours of prime viewing.(Dawn)

Though slightly smaller than November’s supermoon, this lunar event remains impressive. The Earth–Moon distance will be 357,218 km, making the moon about 7.9% larger and 15% brighter than a typical full moon. SUPARCO highlighted that while supermoons appear three to four times a year, exceptionally bright displays like this are rare.

No telescope? No problem. The supermoon is visible to the naked eye, though enthusiasts are advised to head away from city lights for the best view. “The Cold Moon is a perfect opportunity for families, students, and amateur astronomers to enjoy a simple yet stunning natural show,” SUPARCO said.

Across Pakistan, skywatchers are planning backyard gatherings, photography sessions, and social media posts to celebrate the lunar spectacle. For many, it’s more than just a scientific event, it’s a chance to pause and marvel at nature’s brilliance before 2026 begins.
