After years of strained ties, Pakistan and Bangladesh have resumed direct government-to-government trade, with Bangladesh importing 50,000 tonnes of rice from Pakistan. This development comes after a shift in diplomatic relations following the removal of Bangladesh’s India-aligned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The new government in Dhaka has strengthened ties with Islamabad, allowing private trade to restart in November 2024, including the first direct cargo shipment in decades. Under a January agreement, Bangladesh now sources rice from Pakistan at competitive prices, addressing its increasing climate-related challenges.
