Islamabad Introduces New Mandatory Vehicle Requirement to Boost Road Safety

The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has announced a new mandatory requirement for all vehicles, aiming to improve road safety and streamline traffic regulations across the capital.

Under the latest directive, all registered vehicles must undergo a compulsory inspection and compliance verification before being renewed or transferred. This new system, introduced by the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) and the Excise and Taxation Department, seeks to ensure that vehicles on the road meet national safety and environmental standards.

According to officials, the inspection will focus on brake systems, tire conditions, emission levels, and lighting standards. Vehicles that fail to meet the minimum safety threshold will be issued a notice and required to make necessary repairs before being cleared for operation.

Speaking on the development, a senior ITP officer stated that the new measure is part of the city’s broader plan to reduce road accidents, curb pollution, and promote responsible driving habits. “The initiative is designed to make Islamabad a safer city for both drivers and pedestrians,” he said.

The policy also emphasizes digital monitoring. Vehicle owners will be able to book inspection slots online, while results will be automatically updated in the Islamabad Excise system, eliminating manual paperwork and reducing opportunities for manipulation.

The enforcement drive will begin in phases starting December 2025, beginning with commercial vehicles such as taxis, buses, and delivery vans. Private vehicle inspections will follow early next year.

Authorities have warned that non-compliance could lead to fines, registration suspension, or even impounding of vehicles found unfit for road use.

With this initiative, Islamabad becomes one of the few cities in Pakistan to adopt an automated vehicle inspection regime, aligning with international safety benchmarks.
