In a landmark decision poised to revolutionize intercity travel in Pakistan, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the Lahore–Rawalpindi bullet train project. This high-speed rail initiative aims to reduce travel time between the two major cities to just 2.5 hours, significantly enhancing connectivity and economic integration within the province.

  • Route: Lahore to Rawalpindi

  • Travel Time: Approximately 2.5 hours

  • Approval Date: April 27, 2025

  • Key Figures:

    • Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif

    • Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb

    • Federal Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi

  • Implementation Model: Public-Private Partnership (PPP) under consideration

The project is part of a broader vision to modernize Punjab's transportation infrastructure, aligning with international standards and catering to the province's growing mobility needs.

  • Economic Growth: Enhanced connectivity is expected to stimulate economic activities between Lahore and Rawalpindi, two of Punjab's economic hubs.

  • Time Efficiency: The reduced travel time will benefit daily commuters, business travelers, and tourists alike.

  • Environmental Impact: High-speed rail offers a more sustainable alternative to road and air travel, contributing to reduced carbon emissions.

  • Urban Development: The project is anticipated to spur development along the corridor, leading to urban expansion and job creation.

A dedicated working group has been established to oversee the project's feasibility and execution. The group comprises:

  • Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan

  • Advisor to the Chief Minister Shahid Tarar

  • Chairman of Pakistan Railways

  • Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Railways

This team is tasked with presenting a comprehensive feasibility report and timeline to the Chief Minister within a week.

The project's estimated cost is projected to be in the multi-billion-dollar range. Experts estimate the per-kilometer cost of laying railway track for a fast train to be between $40 and $50 million, potentially bringing the total cost up to $10 billion.

To manage this substantial investment, the Punjab government is exploring a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aiming to leverage private sector expertise and funding while maintaining public oversight.

In addition to the Lahore–Rawalpindi route, the Punjab government is considering high-speed rail projects on six additional routes:

  • Lahore–Shahdara–Narowal

  • Lahore–Raiwind–Kasur–Pakpattan–Lodhran

  • Sheikhupura–Jaranwala–Shorkot

  • Shorkot–Jhang–Sargodha

  • Lala Musa–Sargodha via Mandi Bahauddin

  • Faisalabad–Chak Jhumra–Shaheenabad

Feasibility studies for these routes are underway, reflecting the government's commitment to expanding the province's high-speed rail network.

Complementing the bullet train project, the Punjab government is also focusing on urban mass transit systems:

  • Lahore Yellow Line: A mass transit project with a feasibility study deadline set for May 30.

  • Gujranwala Mass Transit Line: Another key project with a feasibility study deadline of June 15.

These initiatives aim to modernize urban transportation, reduce congestion, and improve the quality of life for residents.

The bullet train project has garnered widespread support from various stakeholders:

  • Political Leaders: Members of the National and Punjab Assemblies have hailed the project as a milestone for Punjab's development, emphasizing its potential to transform the province's transportation landscape.

  • Public Sentiment: Citizens have expressed optimism about the project's potential to reduce travel time, enhance convenience, and stimulate economic growth.

The approval of the Lahore–Rawalpindi bullet train project marks a significant step towards modernizing Punjab's transportation infrastructure. By reducing travel time, fostering economic growth, and promoting sustainable development, the project aligns with the government's vision of a progressive and connected Punjab.
