ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan stepped into 2026 amid regional uncertainty and domestic challenges, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari paid glowing tribute to the nation’s resilience and martyrs, describing 2025 as a “golden year” for the defence of the homeland.
In his New Year message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the armed forces and the people of Pakistan for standing united against hostile designs, calling Pakistan’s air defence a global model of success. He reaffirmed the country’s unwavering resolve to defend its sovereignty and paid homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the fight against terrorism.
Expressing optimism on the economy, the prime minister said improvements in key indicators reflected the government’s positive direction. He pledged to fast-track economic reforms launched in 2025 to ensure sustainable growth, prosperity, and stability, while calling for national unity, democracy, and reconciliation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional and global peace, voicing solidarity with the people of Kashmir and Palestine, and prayed for protection against terrorism, division, and instability in the year ahead.
In a separate message, President Asif Ali Zardari urged unity, economic discipline, and national reconciliation, describing the global environment as increasingly complex due to conflicts, climate change, and economic pressures. He stressed productivity, exports, and inclusive growth as pillars of economic sovereignty.
Warning that climate change had emerged as a national security challenge, President Zardari highlighted floods, droughts, water scarcity, and extreme heat as pressing threats. He also cautioned against political confrontation, urging democratic forces to engage responsibly and prevent hostile elements from exploiting internal divisions.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s non-negotiable defence and commitment to peace, the president expressed concern over water disputes and regional tensions, while renewing support for Kashmir and Palestine. Calling for restraint, unity, and renewal, he concluded his message with a call for collective resolve to move Pakistan forward.
