High-Tech Relief: Punjab Introduces Drone Airlift Service for Flood Victims
The PTA has announced it will block all unregistered mobile devices from local networks under the DIRBS system, urging users to register their phones via IMEI check to avoid disconnection.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that it will begin blocking all unregistered mobile devices from accessing local networks in the coming days. The move is part of the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) initiative, aimed at curbing the use of smuggled, counterfeit, and non-compliant phones across the country.
The decision comes as part of the government’s efforts to:
-
Stop the smuggling of mobile devices that bypass taxes and duties.
-
Ensure only PTA-verified devices operate on Pakistani networks.
-
Protect consumers from fake or substandard phones.
-
Increase tax revenue through legal imports.
According to officials, all devices not registered with the PTA’s DIRBS will be automatically blocked from making calls, sending SMS, or using mobile data.
Users can verify the status of their mobile devices through PTA’s official channels:
-
SMS: Send your 15-digit IMEI number to 8484.
-
Online Portal: Visit https://dirbs.pta.gov.pk
-
Mobile App: Use the PTA DIRBS app available on Android and iOS.
If the device shows as “compliant,” it will continue to function. If “non-compliant,” users will need to pay duties and register the phone.
A PTA spokesperson explained:
“Only registered and duty-paid mobile devices will be allowed to operate on Pakistani networks. This step ensures consumer protection, fair business practices, and revenue generation for the national exchequer.”
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has also welcomed the move, noting it will help curb illegal imports and boost legal mobile phone sales.
-
Positive: Many support the move, saying it will discourage smuggling and protect users.
-
Concerns: Some consumers argue that registration costs and duties are too high.
-
Experts: Suggest the government should simplify the registration process to encourage compliance.
The PTA’s decision to block all unregistered mobile devices is a major step toward eliminating the grey market in Pakistan’s telecom sector. While it may initially cause inconvenience for some users, the long-term benefits include consumer safety, better regulation, and stronger revenue collection for the country.
