Often called "Turkish pizza," pide is a typical Turkish flatbread cooked with a soft dough based on yeast. Various components, including cheese, veggies, ground beef, and occasionally eggs, are placed on top of it. Before being roasted till crispy, the dough is formed into the shape of a boat.  In Turkish cuisine, pide is frequently eaten as a snack or as a main course. You can alter it by adding different toppings to suit your preferences.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 lb ground lamb or beef (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese (such as mozzarella or feta)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1-2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 1 egg (optional, for topping)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs like parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions

  • The first step in making Pide is to prepare the dough.  
  • Put the yeast, sugar, and warm water in a bowl and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it foams.  
  • Next, knead the dough until it's smooth after adding the flour, salt, and olive oil.  
  • For 1 to 1.5 hours, cover and allow it to rise.  
  • If using, brown the ground meat in a pan over medium heat while the dough is rising.  
  • Cook for a few more minutes after adding the bell peppers, tomatoes, and chopped onions.  
  • Add salt and pepper for seasoning.
  • Divide the dough into equal halves after it has risen, then roll each part into a boat or oval form.  
  • Leave a border around the edges of each piece of dough when spooning the filling onto it, then top with shredded cheese.  
  • The pide should be baked for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the crust is brown and crispy, at 450°F (230°C).
